Default Oil related question

Hi guys I have a 97 Civic with a d15b 3 stage vtec motor.

The mileage is 400,xxx. I changed the oil pump late last year and my mechanic is using a high rated motor oil 20w 50.

Wanted to know what weight of motor oil i should be really using?

I use to use 10w 40 on my B16a Hatch with absolutely no problems. Can i go back to using that?

Is there a car or engine problem that I missed? What problem requires a solution?

No immediate problem. Just don't want a problem to pop up in the long run.

5w30 is what I believe was recommended on that engine at the time it was built.

10w30 or 5w30 should be okay unless there is heavy wear that requires the super thick 20w50 oil. It's a bit thick for the motor.
