B16A High Mileage Rebuild - What to replace?
Hi, I'm currently in the process of gathering parts for a rebuild on my B16. The engine has 133k miles and will be rebuilt on a budget, but I will not cut any corners. Apart from the well-known parts list (bearings, gaskets, oversized pistons, water pump, belts and etc) what is common to fail or that needs replacement on a rebuild on these engines? I wonder what is the lifespan of some of the valvetrain components (springs, retainers, keepers), oil pump and if there is any other parts that need to be replaced on a rebuild (main cap bolts, cam cap bolts, any torque-to-yield bolts, etc)
Do you have a factory service manual? When disassembling, you can inspect everything against that and determine whether or not it should be replaced.
Biggest pointer I could give you is bore it over to 81.5mm if it’s currently burning oil. Also the main cap bolts are fine and shouldn’t need replaced.
Yes, I do have the FSM, can't live without it! Unfortunately there is some test procedures missing: There isn't a way to test valve springs, no mention of replacing/verifying head bolts, main/cam cap bolts and other stuff. I just wanted to make sure if more experienced guys would have any tips and pointers that would save me from any troubles.
Thank you. The engine is indeed burning oil, and a compression test shows between 180-175. Oversized pistons were in the plans, but I was thinking to go .010" over instead of .020" to better conserve the sleeves for a potential forced induction application. Any specific reason to not even bother and go straight to 81.5mm as per your suggestion?
