Icon4 Intermittent Weird Starter Problems On My '13 Accord EX-L

For a couple months now, getting worse over time, is my car's ability to start. Once it starts, the car runs smoothly.

Outside of the 1 in 100 time it starts normally, I hit the push button starter and then you hear a click. The car doesn't start. This is what I see. Once this happens, if I stay on this screen and push the button, the car will never start. My buddy yesterday with a volt meter showed that in this "mode", no current gets sent.

What I can do is double-tap the push button, putting it into this mode:

In this mode, eventually the car will start. Each "attempt", the volt meter shows that when the button is pressed, it jumps to somewhere between 12.0 - 12.7 volts.

In both cases, you hear a click, and then a click a couple seconds later.

I've tried all of the "hacks" I've seen...key fab close to the glove box, putting the car into neutral first, having the car move a little to re-align the flywheel...nothing consistently works.

We can't tell if it's the ignition switch or something in the starter itself. When the car is running, testing the electrical circuits at AutoZone & Advance, it comes back that the voltage regulation in the car is off. BUT this remains the case AFTER I replaced the alternator.

We checked the grounds and battery wires and it's not coming from them. The battery holds charge over 12V when the car is off.

I don't want to spend money on a new starter if this turns out to be just a switch issue somewhere. Has anyone else had these problems?

I am currently having the same issue.

After speaking with a friend of mine that is a tech at a local Honda dealership he has assured me that it is the starter and that this is a common problem for 2013-2015 Honda Accords with the 4 cylinder engine.

I am currently waiting for a new starter to arrive at the dealership so I can have it installed.

If your vehicle has a V6 engine there is a TSB that should cover the replacement cost of your starter. If your vehicle has a 4 cylinder then I think you are on your own to cover the cost of the starter replacement.

TSB for the V6 Accords is TSB 16-002 (PDF of TSB attached).

I hope this helps.

Yeah...I have a 4 cyl. From other forums (I posted on 3 Honda forums total), they too state that this is the starter, but that you can get by with replacing the starter with a lightly used one from a newer model within this generation (as a better alternative to buying a reman). So I'm going that route since I'm paying basically the same amount for the part as for a diagnostic at a local auto electric shop.

Starter was installed yesterday evening and now the car starts every time.

it feels nice not having to worry if the car is going to start first try or not.

I have a 2014 Accord 6 speed mannual, I think it is an LX. So after dealing with this issue for the last year I think i have finally figured out the problem. I dont know the part names or numbers but if you look at the diagram below in box 7 there is a metal washer (brass, copper, ?) that attaches to the bottom of that little plunger. When the plunger lifts it closes the circuit, starter get the signal to start. On the one I just took out the contact piece that the washer touches was melted and pitted away. I could see the washer out line where it used to make contact. I replaced the battery about 1 1/2 years ago and the problem came back. The replacement starter I bought didnt work right and just free spun. I thought it was the starter so I took it back. When it happened again with a second starter I knew something was off. Turns out I was given the wrong starter twice. Numbers matched up and the parts looked the same until I took out the guts of new one and it didnt match up. It spun clockwise and my car needed counter clockwise . i had no idea there were 2 different spinning starters. There is a brush assembly you can order from honda (below box 1 in the middle) for $40 or $45 dollars that replaces this contact that wears out. Hopefully this helps anyone with the same problem.
