I recently purchased a 93 del sol. The previous owners had gotten it when they bought their house so they had no clue what was done to it. I want to figure out what is in it so that I can figure out what parts to buy to work on it. According to the vin it should have a d16z6 in it but there is a bunch of weird stuff done to the car and I want to make sure that is what still in here. Any tips or pointers to working on these engines would also be appreciated. I have worked on a lot of cars but not too many older Honda’
You provided the engine head stamp PR3-2 from 1996. It's not a D series motor. Now there is a square portion on the block next to the transgression bell housing that has the block stamp. Likely a B18B or something. It should be to the left of the exhaust manifold if you are facing the motor looking at it from the front of the car.
Yeah I basically just bought the car to mess around with. Got it for $200 with new 17 in Falken rims and brand new tires all the way around. As well as a new aftermarket front and back bumper and new headlights and tail lights. If it runs it would be nice but if not idc
Bangin dude! I just did b20b swap into a 95 hatch. Vtec is where it’s at. If the block is toast get a high compression b20 block and use your head. B20vtec. Yea mane $200 is a big ole comeup. Tranny might be toast judging by that crack but the setup and chassis is probably still worth it depending on conditions. Good luck.b
No it’s not a crack just some junk from sitting. I don’t have a starter right now but I get one tomorrow. I will go over everything possible then see if she runs
The car needs a lot of work but if the motor and trans are even remotely ok then I will do all of the body work. I think the previous owner was going for having no body lines for some reason because there is bonds where Avery crack should be. But I came with 4 new Falken rims, 4 brand new tires, a brand new set of head lights, and a brand new set of tail lights. As well as a ton of extra interior parts and a bunch of gauges ie. boost, oil temp etc
Based on the photos that you have provided, it is likely a JDM '96-97 Type R engine. Great deal for $200. I say pull the swap out and scrap the rest... there is a TON of work needed to bring that one back from the brink... and whoever did that to a Del Sol should be flogged.
I would tend to agree with @JRCivic1 on this....JDM 96-97 ITR.
It is deffo JDM as it is missing the suffix number on the engine code, USDM would read B18C1 or B18C5.
Also, the fact a PR3 head is siting on a B18C is leading me to believe this is a early Type R as well as a GS-R B18C would have a P72 stamped head.
Are there any green markings or paint near the protrusion of the head under the distributor? If so that is an indicator of it being a Type R head as well. (Sometimes that paint will fade or has been scrubbed off by cleaners etc.). Like this...
Also, just looking at the chassis...id recommend ditching it and finding another chassis to work with. All that body filler, aftermarket panels...its a mess. Again, just IMO.
Then you will have a donor car to steal parts from and then you can scrap/junk it when you are done.
Considering the time and money it will take to get that body up to par it would be much easier and cheaper to buy a car with a clean body to swap the b series into.
Yeah I’m in the process of getting another del sol that needs a motor and trans and some interior pieces but the outside is in great condition. I have every interior piece as well as 2 of some of them. So I’ll swap out motor and trans as well as the wheels and most interior parts.
