I dropped a 72k mile D16Y7 from a wrecked 1998 LX automatic sedan (81 year old lady) into a 1997 D16y7 LX automatic sedan. Not catching the extra plug(c136), I used the harness and ECU from the 98 in the 97. BING! CEL came on with evap code(don't remember the #), no D4 light on shift indicator when in D4, and the D2 light is always on with key on no mater what gear it placed in. I swapped out ecu for the original 97 and no more CEL. Unfortunately, the 1997 engine wiring harness went away with the old engine and transmission. I know that the C136 8 pin(4 wire) plug is the issue, as 3 of the wires go to "trans control" and the 4th goes to the "interlock system". So it has to do with the dash wiring after it leaves the plug. I just don't have an ETM to trace where exactly they go after they leave the plug and go through the firewall. My plan is to make my own harness for that plug if I have to. I do not have a wiring scamatic for this 97 lx. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
The OE parts catalog shows the same part number for the '97 and '98 Civic LX Auto Sedan applications (32110-P2E-A60), however, the '97 also shows a second part number available (32110-P2E-A53). This would suggest some difference between the two part numbers... and the 8-pin plug you have specified is likely the difference.
You have unfortunately learned a very valuable lesson here with respect to your old parts: NEVER get rid of old parts before the new stuff works flawlessly. The good news is that the engine harness is still available from Honda and is reasonably priced if you need to buy a replacement.
Thanks for responding JRCivic1 and muellersfan. I checked the #s on the ECU's. The 97 has an ecu #37820-P2E-A72(dated Nov 96) and the 98 has 37820-P2E-L82(dated Jan 98). I do believe the ecu's to be original to the corresponding cars. The owner of the 98 bought the car new, and I was the only person to work on the car until her passing. As far as the 97 goes, I drove the car for a year with no issues, until the head gasket blew. I figured at 240k on the clock, I might as well drop the donor engine and trans in, as to repair the head gasket. Also, the 97 doesn't even have c136 plug. it is the second plug down in the in the diagram that you posted muellersfan. The 97's firewall/dash harness has not been modified in any way, never had it. Thats why I thought if I had wiring diagram for the bulkhead side of the connector, I might be able to make some changes to correct the problem. Knowing that that connector shows a link to the trans controller and that my problem is with the shift position indicator, it just makes sense that that connector is the culprit. the 98 harness that is in the car is flawless and I see no issues with its integrity.
The diagram below indicates that 97-98 Civic D16Y7 models with an automatic transmission had the 8-pin C136 connector. The corresponding Civics with a manual transmission did not.
One possibility is that your 97 Civic originally came with a manual transmission and someone later swapped in an automatic transmission and did some rewiring to make it work. Doing the VIN check might solve the mystery.
