Default SRS Light Woes

Hey all,

I have a 2001 sulev sedan. Car has a lot of miles and I have done a ton of work to it. Runs like a top for the most part. Recently the SRS light came on. I was getting in, fumbling with starting the car and plugging in my seatbelt in a hurry... and the SRS light trips on.

Of course:
- No code shows up on my scanner
- Resetting does nothing

So I called Honda to see if they will cover the diagnostic fee so I don't have to pay a dealership $200 to tell me I need a new seat belt buckle or an SRS unit (because I am just going to go get one from a pick-n-pull for 30 bucks) and they told me no... they will NOT cover any diagnosis fee related to the SRS system.. even though SRS related issues are only touched by dealerships apparently. Seems rather exclusive.

I wanted to defer to the boards expertise on this one... have you dealt with this issue itself? I am wondering what the best sequence of action is to trace down this problem? Should I just get new buckles and an SRS unit from a junkyard and throw them in?

P.S. I need the SRS light to work, I would like airbags... I built this car stock so my GF can drive it.. so no I won't crack the dash open and disable the light/etc... lol

Thanks for any help yall!

I'm new here... but I have the same 01 sulev sedan, with 198k on it. I had to take it to the dealership a few months ago for the replacement airbag thing ( I took my sweet time before I brought it in).
My SRS light was on then too, but I didn't think anything of it.... Honda told me it was a faulty seatbelt sensor and the replaced it for free for me. I was stunned.
Having worked at a dealership, service can really depend on 'who you get'. Drive it there, ask if someone can take a look at it for free, say it's concerning you and to your understanding, only dealerships work with the srs system(all truths, no lies). You'd be surprised at what that might get you. Just my 2 cents.
Worse case you get some free coffee from the place, not a total waste

That is a very common problem in these cars. The seat belt sensors go bad and it's usually the receptacle that the buckle snaps into.
YES Honda does replace them for free.
