Hybrid Transmission 94 Del Sol --Long 5th gear
I own a mostly stock 94 Del Sol that I use as a commuter car for driving the 80 miles from here to Chico, CA and back. I love driving this beautiful convertible, but I want better gas mileage. I've already put a cold air intake on it, and upgraded the tires to 185/60R14 tires with super low rolling resistance. I've trained myself to hypemile and really keep my foot off the gas as much as possible. I'm now getting: ---44MPG at 65MPH on the interstate and ---48MPG when driving on the parts of Route 99 that are signed for 55MPH!
----But the RPMs are up at 3000 to 3200 when I keep up with traffic on the interstate (77MPH to 80MPH). I feel like 3200RPM is not good, and I could let the engine live longer and get better mileage at lower RPM on flat and level highway.
Solution: 5th gear (and maybe 4th too) swap from a CRX HF transmission to my transmission. I've tried to find threads about this, but it doesn't seem like anyone has ever done a HF tranny swap TO a Del Sol. Mostly, I just see threads about how to put Del Sol running gear into a CRX HF. I guess everyone wants to make their CRXs faster off the line, not more efficient.
I have the D15B7 Engine in my 94 Del Sol (Non-VTEC SOHC). The CRX HF donor car has the D15A2 engine (Non-VTEC Carburated)
I realize that the transmission from a HF probably will not bolt right up to the Del Sol, that is why I want to put the gears from one transmission into the other.
On the outside the two transmissions look the same, but before I pull the engine and trans out of this Pick-N-Pull CRX HF, I would love to know if this is possible. Have you ever heard of something like this being done? Will the gears fit?

Also, if anyone wants to pull parts off a very nice 1986 CRX HF, there is one in the Redding, California Pick-N-Pull that was brought in when the carburation system continually failed to pass Californian smog requirements. I looked at it yesterday, and everything is there, even the headlights and seats.
