Default Honda Transmission

I just put an MPJA Odyssey transmission in my 94 EX. The shop gave me a few parts that they did not use. One was a position sensor. It fits on the right side transmission cover, near the bottom, over a shaft extending from the cover. This is obviously something that the Odyssey uses that the Accord does not use. Mine seems to perform fine without it. So I was wondering what is it's purpose? And why can I get by without it?

Odyssey is a column shift vehicle, Accord is floor shift. Accord has room for the gear shift selector switch on the shifter, Ody doesn't. So the gear shift selector switch gets put on the transmission directly.

I didn't realize that Odyssey was column shift. I didn't know they existed any more. So that shaft on the side of the cover serves no purpose.. I considered just cutting it off to prevent something from hitting it by accident. I guess it wouldn't really matter unless I was going to re-install it into an Odyssey (which won't happen)
