Default lock cylinder

What do you guys do when your door lock cylinders worn out due to daily use over the last 20 years? how do you replace the door lock cylinders having the new ones work with the same key?

If you take the cylinder apart you can get the numbers off the wafers. I've pulled lock sets from other Civics in the junk yard until I got wafers that were in good condition with the right numbers, then installed the wafers in the order I wanted. With these cars being more rare in the junk yards, this may not be feasible. I'll bet with some digging you can find aftermarket lock wafers somewhere. If your key is really worn, you may need to have a locksmith cut a new key after you install new wafers.

The method you described is the same for door and ignition lock cylinders?

Did you try spraying some WD40 into the keyhole of the lock cylinder. That's the first thing to try.

He states this is a door lock he is "rekeying". Looks like it's wafers for it too so can go through the same process at my first glance.

You sure it's the lock cylinder? My drivers door reach a point where it would not unlock sometimes. After taking it all apart, it was the lock mechanism in the door latch that was failing. Lots of plastic parts in those latches. They get really sloppy over time.

You want to use a dry lubricant, graphite spray or graphite lube in a little tube. Its $2 from oreilleys

Yes its worked on every civic ive owned. I had a $400 junkyard lx that felt like I put the key in rocks when I put it in the cylinder, I'd really have to wiggle it to get it to start

I got a tube of graphite and puffed the powder into the cylinder and on the key and it worked like new.

Its a dry graphite tube. Its almost like pencil shavings. They dont sell it anymore at autozone but I believe oreilleys still has it

Yes. You could also do it yourself watching a few YouTube videos

The key and cylinder are like $24 from autozone. Though you will now have 2 keys for the car, one for the doors and one to start the car

locksmiths don't replace the cylinder but they can re-key them. Give you new keys too. Had this done multiple times now: mom's house, tacoma, and I'm about to do it for her car and my sisters integra.

How did you "Puffed" the powder in the ignition cylinder? My ignition feels like its grinding and I have to wiggle the key when I put it in to turn it easy. Will this stuff help?

I worked for pop a lock and we would replace them if they were damaged if not then there is no need to and you can just re key them.

This thread has a nice little bump schedule!

I bought a replacement cylinder and then rebuilt it to keep using my key. That made a big difference.

Then I got a new key at the dealer, cut to my VIN - also made a big difference!

On a regular Honda blank (ribbed) it was <$2. I also got a red H Prelude key, that was closer to $20!

What is the part number for the red H key? I need to rebuild my driver side door lock cylinder as well. When you ordered the new lock cylinders from Rockauto, do all of them have the same model number on the side to match your old one?
