Starter or solenoid? Change both, I think.

Yesterday I put in a dizzy coil...new rotor and cap. It worked and the car ran fine. Drove a little and came home.

This morning I take it all back apart to change the igniter. On the '90 the screws that hold the igniter are on the bottom of the distributor. So I pulled it out and the igniter that was in there was very old. I put everything back together....starter won't turn over...nothing. Silence. I've checked the relays.

Yesterday when I was putting the coil in, and specifically the new rotor on, I forgot to put a rag under it and lost the tiny screw that holds the rotor in place. So I'm fishing around with a magnet on a stick and I hear something. It turned out to be the relay inside the solenoid. It moved the relay or whatever, inside the solenoid. I did get that screw, but when I went to start the car I'm getting that clicking, buzzing or however you describe the solenoid makes when it's not doing its job.

Thinking it was possible that it was just a weak battery, I juiced the batter on a 10amp charge for a few minutes. It made that buzzing sound again a couple times, but then started. I drove up to the ice house for some ice cream...thinking all was good.

No!

After I put the new igniter in, I've got nothing. No starter. No bump, nothing.

I have to think it's the solenoid.

Anybody?

Gee, I found one drop shipped from denso, for $136. Remanufactured by them.

It could be the relay or something else, but I'll need one sooner then later.

Not the starter. I was able to bump the starter going from the battery+ to the "S" terminal on the solenoid. I don't mind buying parts for this car. The OEM stuff is getting harder to find, and I'll need the new starter eventually.

What's left? From the ignition key, the clutch interlock, the gearshift interlock and the starter relay. ..or some wire in between. I hate working under the dash and taking all the panels off, etc......

I did check voltage from the "S" terminal to battery negative from inside the car, with the clutch depressed, in neutral, key on. .5 volts. No power going to that part of the solenoid.

I found it. When I put some light under the dash to remove the panel under the steering wheel, I saw it. A little piece of rubber that looks like a hat with a pointy top. I knew exactly what that sucker is. I'd glued it back together 5-6 years ago when I was in Corpus working on my boat.

They don't exist, of course, but I may try and put some silicon up in the hole at the top of the clutch pedal and let it dry real well. The upper most clutch interlock...the switch or button is let go of when you push the clutch. It's just a hole...in a tang at the top of the clutch pedal. The little rubber hat goes in the hole and cushions the contact with the switch. I was able to reach up in there and depress the switch....car starts fine. Runs good after the dizzy work.

I may have some stuff I bought in Corpus that fits in that hole...some plastic screw holders...or I'll glue something semi-soft up in there.

Damn hard to get to.

they last about 23 years.
$5 each aint exactly cheap:

they go in easy with some tape on a flathead screwdriver to get way up there.
pulling ou the driver seat and a worklight helped a lot.

I'll be....How'd you find these. It's not really a grommet, tho I found something similar on rockauto accidentally. Out of stock though.

I couldn't even find the part or part number listed on my year at all. Hope it's the same hole size, but then again I can silicone them in. That what I did anyway with out the part.

Thanks!

I love my '90 Teg and I always get the job done. Good thing it was well maintained by its first owner.

I'll be adding the ground control and eibach springs soon....but at stock height. They made them longer so I could.
