I have a 1990 Honda Accord Ex that my wife drives. This car has been in her family since new. The car was bought brand new in 1989 by her dad for her mom. Her mom drove the car for, oh, about 100K then the car was passed to her brother. Her brother put about another 100K on it. Now she has the car and it has about 240K on it now. The plan is to keep it running and pass it to the daughter. We would like to see it be another 1M Honda Accord. I know it an be done. And Honda likes to see these cars go to 1M and return to the dealers.

It has a little cancer in the rear quarters behind the doors (appears typical for these cars in the Midwest). I have put an aftermarket cone air filter on it (she was in an accident and destroyed the factory air box). The car has only been involved in one accident. So far, the ignition system and the surging idle are the only real problems the car has had.

 

Maybe 1M miles with a standard transmission, 90-93 Accords are tanks,

 

Actually, it has an automatic. The venerable 4-speed overdrive. It has a linkage alignment problem that has plagued it for a while. The workaround is to bring the shifter to D3, then return it to D4 and all is right. The car seems to be smoking on start up, so I suspect the original valve seals may be worn. After 240K, I would not be surprised. And, I admit, when I drive the car, I DRIVE the car. It's a Honda! They were built to be driven. Anyway, I'm thinking about doing an overhaul. Nothing special, just a stock ring and bearing job. Do the head, deck the block, keep it stock. After all, the wife drives it and I don't want those questions that invariably come when the prized family Accord runs and drives like a Sports Car Club weekend racing machine. She would not be amused.

 

Had the same problem years ago with the auto shift linkage! I have owned 4 of these Accords the 5-speeds are great!
