Default 98 civic in limp mode

I have a 98 civic dx stuck in limp mode it won't pass 3500 rpm. I'm a complete noob, but had my friend (that's a mechanic) replaced the distributor with an aftermarket distributor because car was misfiring and replaced the crankshaft position sensor with aftermarket CPS because OBDII ran the code p0336 before it went to limp mode. Not sure what the problem is, the CEL is still on and throwing the same code, p0336. Do I need OEM for these parts for it to be fixed?

Another friend told me to do a ignition timing adjustment because I changed the distributor, haven't tried yet. But does anyone else have any other ideas might be the issue?

Check that the cam and spark is in time. Check that the sensor wires aren't chewed up from getting into the pulley or the alternator belt. Check that you have the correct crank timing belt sprocket with the teeth on it to drive the sensor.
