So I've had a pretty random check engine light come on 2 times 2 nights in a row almost at the same distance driving home from work. I pull over immediately and turn my car off. I crank it back over, no check engine light, no noises or anything out of the ordinary for my 240,000 mile D15B2. I popped the hood like I said nothing new or out of place. It drives fine it doesn't turn on during the day driving around and I drive it a lot. I'm guessing a sensor is going out or something minimal I hope, if it were anything major I assume the light would come on as soon as I turn it on. My question is, since my car is ODB 0 how can I check to see what is causing my check engine light to come on? I've had some issues with the car before but fixed a lot of stuff and got it thru emissions and haven't had an issue for awhile now, if anyone has any info on this any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

To check for codes on an OBD0 EF, there is a little yellow plug by the drivers side shock tower. take off the rubber end of the plug, and jump the 2 pins with a paperclip or wire. then, go in the car and put your key in the ignition, turn it to the second position. Now your check engine light on the cluster will flash. Long flash= 10, short flash=1. for example if you get 4 short flashes you have a code 4. google what the codes mean.

 

No. That procedure might be for an OBD1 conversion with certain harnesses, but it isn't going to work on any stock USDM ED/EE/EF I've seen.

Interesting. Thats how i checked on my 89 civic last week. But it is CDM so may be different.

OP, you are in the states, right?

 

Pull back your passengers carpet, and there is an LED on the ECU that will blink out the code. Your car needs to be on IGN2 for it to activate, and it will store the codes until power is cut to the ECU (ie: battery disconnected).

To decipher the blinks, check the sticky. If you can't figure it out report back.
