Default 7th gen Civic A/T grinding while upshifting

Hi all, my 03 Civic recently started grinding while going around turns uphill. Now, it is doing it more often and the car feels like it is having trouble accelerating to the point I have to nearly put my foot to the floor to get it up to speed. The transmission fluid was just changed roughly 5,000 miles ago and the car has 206k currently. The fluid has a slight burnt smell, but it's still a clean red color. Thoughts?

Grinding is not good and you are probably looking at a rebuild of the trans or swapping of a used of reman unit.
If you said flaring and/or hard shifting, I would have suggested you do another couple of drain and fills with Honda DW-1 ATF but it sounds like you are beyond that.
200K on the original trans is a good run...
Tip: if you do rebuild your trans, use the bigger internal ATF filter from a 04 or 05.

I had feared that 😢 I should note that I didn't use Honda fluid, I just used an equivalent that claimed it was good for Honda/Acura. Owners manual says only use Honda ATF-Z1, but the nearest dealer is an hour away. Should I change it with Honda fluid and see? Or too far gone?
