Petrol Warning Light
Hi, here's something I cannot figure out: the low petrol warning light on the dash stays on permanently - regardless of how much is in the tank. I've had the whole pump/sender out of the tank and tested all the voltages etc. but found nothing odd. I hope it's not the ECU, because if it is I will live with it on !
Any ideas ?

The fuel gauge sender has 3 wires. One is ground, one goes to the gauge. The lt.green/red wire goes to the low-fuel warning light. When the gas is low the sender connects that wire to ground.
So you want find that wire, check it back at the sender. If you unplug the sender, & the light goes out, the sender is bad. If you unplug it & the light stays on, that wire is shorted to ground. Get a DMM & start looking for someplace between the sender & the gauge, where that wire is touching ground. Fix the insulation, tape it up, or something like that.
I don't suppose they changed much to 2000, but I'm not sure. If they didn't change anything, then my Helm book would have said '98 '99 AND 2000.

OK - - sounds like a good plan. I have a workshop manual for this model but the wires are often not described the same - hence the confusion ! It's probably because this is the UK RHD model - albeit made in Marysville. Many thanks for your help.
Hello everyone, Yep, the diagnosis was good. Unplugged from the sender and the light goes out. A check of all the circuits with the DMM confirmed the problem. For the record, the wire for the warning light is White / Red. There may have been a hint of light green, but it wore off years ago !
Now I need to add another item to my renovation list: a new fuel sender (and a new clutch for the air con !)
Many thanks
