The DVD player has stopped working in our 2013 Pilot Touring. It won't read any disc, just tries for a while and then displays "Check Disc" and then "Bad Disc" and ejects. This is happening with every disc. Before it broke, it spent a few days making a progressively louder whirring sound before giving up the ghost. The only thing I've really tried is a lens cleaner disc, which made no difference.

1. Is any kind of repair a lost cause?
2. Is a replacement doable by a not-particularly-handy individual such as myself? I'm seeing the replacement part on eBay for ~$450.
3. Can it be replaced with a different, cheaper version that still fits reasonably well?
4. What would you do?
