Default OBD-2 ZC SOHC Non-VTEC in EG Hatch?

The stock D15B7 in my 93' DX hatchback is completely trashed, I've been looking to swap a different engine into my car as I don't want to rebuild the stock one or pick up something from a junkyard. I was initially thinking a D15B VTEC, but didn't realize availability wasn't super great at the moment (at least that's what I've been told). One re-seller I talked to suggested a 96'-00' OBD-2 ZC SOHC Non-VTEC engine. Honestly, I think I'd probably be happier with that engine due to greater torque and more linear powerband from what I understand.

Does anyone have experience with these engines in a 92'-95' Civic? My understanding is I can swap over my stock intake manifold, injectors, distributor and alternator and everything should plug-in. I've been told the stock P06 ECU will work, but I'd imagine it will run lean due to being for a 1.5 liter engine vs a 1.6 liter engine. I don't know what other ECU would work and I seen a lot of conflicting things through google. The idea for this car is a fun car to drive to work occasionally, autocross, perhaps track days eventually. I want something that's going to be reliable and I won't constantly have to screw around with. Something that will run like an OEM engine. I've seen a lot about the DOHC ZC (which I would prefer), but I need to pass emissions (in Colorado) so I don't think that's an option. Does anyone have first hand experience with anything I'm mentioning, I can't find a lot and I'm out of ideas on where to search.

There's nothing wrong with junkyard engines. Use common sense and look at one before you waste time pulling it out. The easiest thing is to look for another d15b7 and not just buy whatever the engine importer has on hand that he wants to sell.
