89 civic dx sohc zc swap help!!!
Hey there, I’m new to the forum the name is Samuel. I recently picked up an 89 civic sedan dx. The car has a non vtec sohc zc swap, car is still running on dpfi, with a 5 wire d15 dizzy and PM5 ecu. The car runs great for about 10 minutes then throws the code 4 CEL for the Crank angle sensor and it runs like crap. My question is, is there a way to determine what year the motor came from, should I be running a 7 wire distributor with a PM6 ecu? And If so will the car still run with the 7 wire dizzy/pm6 setup on dpfi? Any help would be awesomely appreciated.
The PM6 ECU is specifically designed for MPFI; I don't think there's any way to run DPFI with it. So no, you can't run the TD-02U (MPFI dizzy) with a PM5, and no way to run the TD-01U (DPFI dizzy) with a PM6.
Since I've never heard of issues running the TD-02U on a D15, I don't see how the swap itself is the issue. Assuming you've checked to make sure the timing is correct, then I would suspect the distributor and/or wiring.
This claims that distributor bearing failure is the most likely cause.

Thanks for the help. I’m gonna check continuity to the ecu to verify connection, and if anything I get another 5 wire dizzy see if that resolves it.
I agree with scelestus - your ZC running DPFI isn't the issue. Do look at timing and wiring. Does the distributor look like it's been replaced? If so, is it one of the cheap Chinese distributors? I had two of those fail within a year on my 90 Sedan with the same setup (SOHC Non-VTEC ZC swap running DPFI / PM5 / TD02U). I did the MPFI swap about a year ago, and spent the $ for a Duralast Gold TD18U distributor from AutoZone, which comes with a lifetime warranty.
I really appreciate the input. I ended up buying a new TD-01U distributor for a hundred bucks and so far the issue is resolved. Good call. Thanks
