Looking for an oil to use in my newly purchased 15 Accord Sport. I'm told the dealership uses Mobile 0W-20. A general search on that yields 4 different types: Super, Advanced Fuel, Anual Protection, Extended Protection. I'm going for longevity of the vehicle.

Any recommendations?

Are there big differences between them or is it more of a marketing thing?

 

Use any of them and change on schedule, the engine will outlast the rest of the car.

 

I have been using cheap Wally world supertech synthetic oil on mine and my other vehicles. No issues what so ever. Just keep up with the oil changes.

 

That's cool. Do you do every 5k when you're using synthetic? I mean I know the sensor is probably accurate, just curious if anyone does it sooner.

I have 3,ooo miles rooted so deep in my DNA it feels so weird going 7,5oo, but I gotta trust the experts.

 

That would be a hell no; at worst, follow the OLM in your car. In my case I typically go about 10,000 miles per oil change.

 

 

Just bought a 2018 Accord Sport. First Honda for me. Have been contemplating this same issue. Does the oil we use for these cars have to be Honda HTO-06 approved? Is it better to? Seems to be hard to find a 0w20 synthetic oil with this Honda HTO-06 rating.

 

If you look at the Owner's Manual for the 2018 Accord you will see there is no requirement for HTO-06; the oil just has to be a "Premium-grade 0W-20 grade detergent oil with an API Certification Seal on the container." FWIW, HTO-06 is a very old oil specification and as far as I understand, it was for mid-2000s vintage 5W-30 oil.

 

Thanks shipo! Appreciate the feedback. Agree about the API Certification Seal that you mentioned. And from what I have been reading, being Dexos 1 gen 2 is also good to look for too (gl5), correct?
Will be the first time using synthetic oil, so am trying to learn all I can. Been driving for 30 years and have changed my own oil using only conventional oil.

Dexos is a GM thing; I wouldn't worry about it one way or another.

Not to change this thread's subject (kind of goes along though), do you have any opinions on oil filters? Oil really is only as good as its filtration. I have been running Mann & Mahle filters for the life of my Volkswagen cars with conventional oil. OEM/recommended by most German makes. Been looking around for what I'm going to use on my new Accord...

 

Here again, oil filters are pretty much irrelevant if you're following the factory oil change recommendations. These days engines come out of the factory so clean and operate so cleanly as well there is very little need for oil filters (ever notice how small oil filters have gotten?)

On the other hand, if you are inclined to extend your oil change interval, then going with a high quality filter makes sense.

Also another sort of weird/maybe irrelevant question:

Is there a better gas to use, Shell, Sunocco, BP etc?

It may sound like a weird question but in the case of my Cutlass I think I may have ran into problems from kroger gas.

 

Some folks swear by certain brands; others, myself included, swear there is no difference. Another religion thing.

 

I usually look a the oil life meter. I do it when its around 20%, usually about 5.5k miles.

 

HTO-06 is a very good, very stringent oil and should be used whenever possible. It is an oil formulation that was specifically designed for 1st generation RDX turbo engines, and was, for a time, one of the most robust additive packages and formulations on the market.

However the oil is not mandatory to use in other Hondas and is not available in 0W-20

 

To date, GM dexos1 oil IS the most stringent oil on the market. There is no other oil specification out right now that is better. Period. I would definitely look for the trademarked green dexos1 label when selecting oil.

 

I would argue the latest oil specs from the German car makers are significantly more stringent than Dexos

 

DCFIVER - are you saying you prefer/recommend an oil that has the older branding of just "dexos1" verse the newer year editions of oil that are branded “dexos1 GEN 2”? From what I read, there are significant "up-grades" to the GEN 2.

Yes but the formulation requirements between Asian and domestic vehicles is vastly different than that of European vehicles. Different SAPS requirements, different kinematic and dynamic viscosity, to name a few differences. Additionally Euros tend to require low HTHS requirements,this is not suitable for Asian or American engine designs

No. What Im saying is look for dexos1 label. Period. doesnt matter which generation.

As gen 2 is phased in there will be fewer and fewer gen 1 versions available. Either is fine.(Gen2 was formulated to help resist low speed pre igniton, a big issue in modern high compression ,GDI engines.)

I only recommend dexos1 as overkill,since Honda is relying on API specs to be sufficient,and API specs have notoriously been poor in the past(although SM,SN and SN plus are very good)

 

Just go to Walmart and get Mobil 1 Advanced 0W-20 (meets GM dexos1). Any brand of 'full synthetic' oil will go to 10,000 miles oil changes. But I recommend you use the Maintenance Minder to track your user habits for oil changes. City driving and short trips not letting the engine to fully warm up will shorten your oil change intervals.

 

yea, I saw that and I was surprised at how inexpensive it was, sort of what prompted my post, I felt like I may have been getting the wrong stuff.
