Default 100tw vs 200tw tires. My testing

Hankook fastest lap

Toyo R888R best lap

Last two hpde seasons I’ve ran the 205/50/15 Toyo R888R with pretty good success on my integra. I got 29, 20 min sessions this year on my R888r and they were pretty consistent throughout thier life, even almost bald my last time on them I was only .3 sec off my PB at njmp thunderbolt. Back in April I went 1:40.9 on the new Toyo R888r’s at thunderbolt running the t3 chicane. Weather was high 60’s not a cloud in the sky, perfect weather.

Fast forward End of July I did a track day and they were calling for rain. So my buddy let me borrow his 225/45/15 hankook rs4’s Incase. First session track was dry and on the hankooks. Weather was mid 80’s and humid. I was able to pull off a 1:41.6 on the hankooks first session of the day! Super impressed with them and I feel with a few more sessions I could have gotten close to my PB. I wanted to run them more, but I didn’t wanna put unnecessary wear on tires that were not mine. So my 23 session near end of life toyos went back on. I managed a 1:41.2 on my R888Rs as my best that day on my 7th session. This was my first time running a modern 200tw on track in a long time and I am impressed. I know a lot of guys run thier street car on track and just wanted to share my findings

Interesting. Now go do it again with slicks.

I would love to try some Hoosiers, toyoRR or something similar. Btw both the tires were on a 15x7 wheel.

The Hankook would likely have been even faster on a 9" wheel.

if you want to try "slicks" on the cheap, hit up a local spec miata guy and get some take offs. thats what i run. they are "slightly" faster than a good 200TW, but they stay faster longer. I overdrive my car quite often to get into a comfortable "slippery" zone. I find RRs are still very quick past 15 heat cycles.

Were those speeds taken at the same locations on both traces? The numbers on the track map aren't in the exact same location on the track maps so I'm curious to see if that's a 1:1 comparison.

not same location. They are fastest achieved straight speeds and slowest min corner speeds. It’s the track addict app. I was not super confident in its accuracy until I had a aim solo in the car and was within a tenth on lap times.

At Sonoma there's always a massive pile of used slicks by the tire guys... I always wondered if I could just grab four and if they'd be better than my 200tw tires.

That helps. It looks like the R888Rs still gave you an edge through the high-speed corners and the fast left-right transitions through theTurn 3 chicane, but the Hankooks let you get through the low speed stuff faster. Did you notice much difference in how the tyres responded to steering input?

If they're free or cheap you may as well take them. If you get a set of used 3-4 heat cycle Hoosiers from one of the well known used race tyre shops it'll cost you somewhere between $250-$300 shipped. R7s aren't super sticky after 10-12 heat cycles but I recently learned that DE drivers are happily putting 20-30 heat cycles on a set.

EDIT:
I just remembered that the runoffs are going to be at Sonoma starting October 16th. I bet if you can get in you will have your pick of the litter of 2-heat cycle Hoosiers and BFGs.

so my comparison wasn’t exactly apples to apples because the hankooks were almost new and the toyos had over 23 sessions on them. The Toyo lap i posted was my best from back in April when they only had a few heat cycles on them. Only having one session on the hankooks and it being my first session I feel like the speeds may have picked up in a few of those sections. With The hankooks I did notice the steering input was a little bit more vague/less feed back vs the toyos. I would have loved to do a few more sessions on the hankooks. I would have definitely went faster.

So this begs the question of are the new 888's even that great, or is there really not that huge a diff between 100tw and 200tw?

If the R888Rs degrade anything like the R888s your 23 heat cycle tyres were probably 1.5 seconds slower than when they were fresh. If that gives you a reference point as to how fast the two tyres might be when they're brand new.
