I have a 91 honda crx hf but it came with an 88 honda civic transmission my check engine light is saying speed sensor. Where would that be located, would their be one on the 88 transmission id have to replace

 

it is on the back of the speedometer in the gauge cluster where the speedometer cable attaches - the other end of the speedometer cable goes into the speedometer gear holder on the top of the transmission next to the firewall

 

So would i have to replace the guage clusters to fix the speed sensor because i cant find the speed sensor as a seprate part to buy and if so could i take guage clusters out from any other honda

 

The speed sensor is in the transmission - it is the part that the speedometer cable slots into. It is a completely mechanical part which rotates the sleeved cable, thus moving the speedometer in the gauge cluster. That info is then fed back into the ECU from the cluster.

You mentioned in another post that your speedo cable is missing - that is likely your only problem. It's almost certainly not the cluster in any case.

I have driven around with a dodgy/bad cable on two different EFs now. For some reason I have only ever thrown that code during an in-gear decel (let off gas without clutching). The rest of the time the car seems to have no clue. No idea why that is.

 

So i went to autozone n bought the speed cable repair kit only 4 bucks. My car never had the cable at all n i want to know does the cable need a rubber tube the cable is supposed to go through the cable doesnt look like it would fit n im missing something

Ok so i went to pick n pull got a speedometer cable out of a honda. All connected n still check engine light comes on when down shifting off freeway still saying its the speed sensor....does that mean i need new guage clusters
