I want to keep on top of repairs and maintenance and wondered if there is a maintenance schedule of when to replace parts based on time/km that I can follow rather than waiting for things to fail or have to identify issues?
I highly suggest picking up a copy of the Haynes manual for this car, its just titled "Haynes Repair Manual - Honda Civic 1984 thru 1991"
Here's the page that explains the maintenance schedule
Now some of those instructions are only applicable to certain models, but it should have a designation next to them like "(1984 and 1985 models)"
If you pick up a copy of the book it also has the instructions on how to do every bit of regular maintenance it lists there, along with a bunch of other general stuff like changing brakes, replacing different parts, etc.
Thanks that's really helpful. I'll try and get hold on a Haynes manual in that case. I guess this covers the owner's maintenance but would there be a mechanic schedule in terms of things such as suspension for example that isn't listed here?
Considering that these cars are over 20 years old, there is going to be your regular maintenance for consumable parts.
Suspension components are do not just have typical wear as environment and the variety of abuse has a dramatic effect on it.
Similar to tires and radiator hoses.
You have to take a look and inspect because rubber gets old and deteriorates and different environments and use cases will speed this process.
