Fortune Auto 500 Series Coilover Review
Hello all I recently came into possession of a 2001 Integra GS with only 60k miles and I'm the third owner. However the car soon needed new shocks. I haven't seen a review of of the coilovers I chose for the DC chassis, thus I decided I'd write one after a couple months of use. Well here we are.
ABOUT FORTUNE AUTO:
Fortune Auto is a company based in Virginia which hand assembles coilovers made to order. They are also suppliers in Formula Drift and Global Time Attack. They offer 3 lines of coilover for our cars. They offer the 500 series which is street focused, adjustable ride height, adjustable preload, and damping, and can be upgraded to Swift Springs for a fee, they start at about $1400 and with swift springs will approach $1700. The next step up is the 510 series which is more track focuses, have more aggressive damping out the box, use Amsoil shock oil, and have a different piston, they are still only single adjustable, pricing is roughly $2000. The last step up is the pro series which offer two way or three way damping adjust-ability, come with Swift springs standard and are full track setups. All of their models allow you to choose spring rates, allow for Swift Spring upgrade, all dampers are dyno tested and matched to each other.
MY SPECS:
I purchased a set of 500 series coilovers with the following specs:
Front spring rate of 10k
Rear Spring rate of 8k
Swift Springs
And since I'm not a type R or on type R style control arms I chose USDM under chassis.
BUYING EXPERIENCE:
I bought directly from Fortune Auto on their website, and used their spring selector form located here: https://fortune-auto.com/springselector-htm/. After a few hours I received an email from their sales guy about their recommendations for my use case. Throughout the next few day I asked some more technical questions and always got a reply within 24 hours. Their sales team is excellent with great support throughout the whole process. I placed my order which came to around $1700 and was informed it would take between 3 and 4 weeks to receive my coilovers due to their hand assembled made to order nature. Two weeks pass and I email them again and was told it would be another week to week and a half. They then arrived in three days. Overall a very positive sales experience.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
When I got them in i immediately noticed how much thicker their shock body is compared to the OEM this is due to their monotube and oversized piston nature. The oversized piston allows for more compliance and more force to be exerted, only downside is that compared to smaller monotubes they react slower and are therefore slightly less ideal for autocross due to how often they change direction, they are fine for track use. The shock body is finished very well with a nice matte semi metallic looking finish which appears to be anodized. The top hat is definitely anodized and is a lovely polished green similar to British racing green as a color. There are no machine lines to be seen or felt on either the shock body or top hat. The springs look awesome as well, as one would expect from swift. The adjustment collars are well made and also anodized green and spin freely on the black threads. The damping adjustment has twenty four steps and every single click is tactile and easily felt, there is no question as to whether it you are on a click or not.
INSTALLATION:
Now this was a pain in the *** to no fault of the coil overs. Due to me residing in the rust belt, the head of the bolt running through the rear lower control arms broke off and the rest of the bolt was seized in the 18 year old rubber. However the coilovers fit perfectly into the front shock forks, however due to he thicker shock body, you will have to find a solution to mount the brake lines, I used worm clamps and zip ties. The rears should install fine unless you live in a place where rust screws you like I do and have to drill the bolt out then take the car to a shop to burn the others.
DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:
Immediately felt more through the steering the car was more willing to turn in, and significantly less body roll. However the coilovers really came alive when I got an alignment and corner balance done at P&L Motorsports in Lisle, IL. A well known Chicagoland Subaru/VW/Audi specialist shop. After the car was corner balanced it stuck to the road like it never did before. The handling was far more neutral with less understeer, it turned in much faster and easier than before in either direction with no preference to either side. From a performance stand point a corner I felt safe taking at 70 I could now take at 100. From a feel point, I got great feedback from the wheel. Ride quality after corner balancing was great, and in some ways better than stock, where as stock over small bumps the car would get upset the coilovers just smooth it out, over larger bumps it feels the same as OEM if maybe a touch harsher. This is at the second softest setting up front and the third softest setting in the rear for damping.
CONCLUSION:
Would I recommend these coilovers? Depends on what you are seeking and your budget. If all you want is to get low and don't care about performance or ride quality, then these are probably not what you're looking for due to cost. If you want a comfortable ride, improved handling and great build quality, I think theses would fit the bill. I know I would buy them again.
If anyone has any questions I will try to answer them.
