you can have good compression and still have crap oil control ring(s). I've seen reasonably low-mileage (less than 150k) D-series engines with oil rings packed full of carbon/deposits. I've personally put two back together after cleaning and had zero oil consumption for the first 50k miles.

re-ringing is a bit extreme as a first step. try high-detergent or high-mileage oil. try something like sea-foam oil treatment. if you want to get real experimental (at your own risk) theoretically a quart of ATF in the crank case could break up deposits. don't run high-weight oil (higher than recommended 5W-30 like 10W-30 or 10W-40) even try 5W-20.

if any of that helps a little but you still want less consumption, consider then doing a re-ring on the engine.
