I need to remove the slider (temperature mix, blower speed controls in the climate panel) ***** but can't figure out how. Normally I would expect them just to pull off, but I don't want to find out the hard way that there's some little doodad that must be removed first.

Has anyone removed theirs without breaking them? The Civic service manual shows that they do remove, but doesn't explain how.

 

They do just pull off. even if the locking tab were to be damaged a little rubber cement (or other elastic type adhesive- so they aren't impossible to remove again) can be applied to keep them in place well enough.

 

Thanks very much! I've been going mad trying to figure out how they're attached.

Could you possibly explain where the locking tabs are and how they can be pushed out of the way? Or is there a diagram somewhere that shows how? I'd rather not break them if I can avoid it because the tabs are never strong enough after.

I stuck the tip of a screwdriver in underneath and levered them up verrrry slowly and gently -- and they came right off!

Next question(!) I thought that the black plastic face would separate from the grey part with the circuit board and switches once I got the ***** off, but it turns out that there's something else holding the two pieces together, and it's not the 3 little tabs on top. Do you have any idea what might be holding the parts together? The black face panel doesn't seem to have any structural role that I can tell.

Wrong again: the little tabs on the top were what was keeping them together after all.

So the next step is to decide whether it'll be easier to remove and transplant the a/c switch from this unit into the original one, or switch out the whole unit and replace the pushrod that operates the hot-water valve. Neither sounds like a walk in the park.
