Default New to the V6, educate me?

Hey all,

I am looking at a car for sale on saturday. It's the exact same body/color/interior as my current 2001 SULEV Accord sedan... except it's the V6. It's a good price as it has a few small problems that my 4cyl had... there is an SRS light on and it has an idle surge/drop issue. It has the IACV replaced but there is an idle drop sometimes at stoplights, I fixed this same issue on my current car.

I am pretty interested since I can swap over my nice seats to replace the ripped ones in this v6, and it's good to go, all original.. no mods. I am also interested in the additional 50hp in this platform that I really enjoy.

Now here is the thing... I know NOTHING about honda v6's or the engine in this car. What can I look for besides the usual when I do my inspection? I am very familiar with the car, but this engine is totally new to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The J30 that those cars come with was one of the first entries in the J series platform. It's lackluster at best and doesn't respond particularly well to modifications. Also the transmissions are big steaming piles of garbage. For the transmission it's not a matter of IF it will fail but a matter of WHEN it will fail.

I'm not looking to mod the engine at all... and fortunately the transmission in this car has already been rebuilt. Trust me, I know.. I have replaced the transmission in my current car.

Off-topic from your OP question, but what did you end up doing to solve your idle drop issue at stoplights? I'm having the same issue.

Thanks!

Not sure if this helps regarding the adding of the additional 50 hp, but I have heard anecdotally that some folks have taken the complete head assemblies from the J32A2 motor in the Gen 2 Acura TL Type-S and put them on their J30A1s and gotten at least 25-35 additional HP.

I can buy heads from acura heads and manifold for 150 bucks from a junk yard , i has wonder if make difference ....as i was told it would . My question will manifold fit if it does will it make difference .I was going to rebuild the heads with new vtec springs and lifters and port the heads as i have machine shop that will do it for 300 . I'm Also pull the cam out and send to have so that is more radical . Will manifold make difference in horse power i was also going to add 72 mm throttle body . Any other advice or suggestion please let me know ....one question i do have will the cam work from j32 . Or do i need to pull a cam from j30 . I already place header and mega flow exhaust and up grade sway bars and removed original seat and spare tire and placed carbon fided hood .....I just spend 2000 remanucator lsd 6 speed and placed larger brakes on front and rear .
