Should i buy a 2001 honda prelude for 800
Came across a honda prelude for 800 and the body is straight and the interior is clean, the engine has a bad knocking noise, so im wondering if it would be worth it.
If its got a clean, straight body and good interior, I'd buy it lol Thats a great price. Theres a few ways to go. theres a chance the engine only has a spun bearing in which case you could save it and rebuild it. This would require a shop it sounds like as you arent looking to do it yourself. Sometimes the bearing for a connecting rod, adheres to the finished surface its supposed to be sliding on and begins to spin in its machined "seat" if you will. We call this a "spun" bearing. Worst case you'd need to rebuild the motor with a new connecting rod and crankshaft as well as bearings. Other times its just started to be a problem and you can get away with doing just the bearings and maybe a rod. Either way you'd need a mechanic you can remove the engine and tear it down, inspect and give you an estimate as to what a rebuild might cost. This is also a good time to go through the rest of the engine and replace seals etc. The other option is to buy a used engine but even then you'd likely want to freshen things up and replace parts before putting it in, that too would require a mechanic to swap rebuild and swap the new engine in.
A used 2001 Prelude with 100k miles and in "very good" condition, which this one your looking at may be (aside from the engine) books for anywhere from $3,200-$5,000 for a private party value.
To buy a used motor and swap it in OR to rebuild the current one your looking at at least $2,000 and thats the low side. So plan on about $2,500-$3,000 to get it up and running.
If your okay with spending $3,300-$4,000 to have a 2001 Honda Prelude, then it sounds like you outta buy that car and get goin!
