Default 2000 Accord 2ed gear replacement

So' I've recently lost 2ed gear in my Accord (SE, 2.3L automatic), and I was looking to do a rebuild because my father is a mechanic of 20+ years and I'm able to have him help me and do it for me and the pricing on rebuild kits seem to be well under $200. I'm just worried that it wont replace or fix the gear (my guess is the gear has lost enough teeth so it doesn't grip anymore? I'm not 100% sure though). Would I need to buy a gear specifically or something? I just need some help, thanks

with the auto, it's most likely a hydraulic issue or worn clutch pack. I've never come across one that stripped the teeth. there are too many other weak points for the gear itself to be damaged that way.

a good kit will have all the parts you need to have a like new transmission. go for it.
