What application are you looking to replace ??? Both companies that you have mentioned HAVE been an OEM supplier for Honda at some point... but not necessarily now.

I changed my timing belt & other components about two years ago when I still had my EM1, I used a gates racing belt (got a good deal on it new), gates tensioner & a OEM Yamada water pump. I am pretty sure my old OEM pump I removed was a Yamada as well, but I know Aisin is the manufacturer of several other Hondas/Acuras. You can use amazon, but I know there are some fake products floating around on their site, could always check out Rockauto and see what they currently have, usually they have decent prices and quick shipping.

When questions like this pop up, my answer will always be 'what you can afford'. Pointless to debate quality when they are always looking for the cheapest.

Not really... going oem and paying oem price is ok. But if for example Gates makes oem belts for Honda then you can pay half the price etc. it’s not about being cheap it’s knowing what options are available.

I am using this forum just to explore options.

lets not make this about how much money to spend stay on topic thanks

I personally use Contitech timing belts on my older Honda's. They are very affordable and they may have even improved on OEM material's if not make just as good of a belt.

German company.

Water pump, I go OEM/Aisin.

The OEM supplier for the timing belt and water pump on a 1999-2000 Civic Si is UNITTA and Yamada respectively. Now for the OP, with respect to making the leap that because a particular supplier made XYZ product for Honda doesn't mean that their own branded replacement is of equal quality... the requirements specified by the OEM are likely superior to those targeted by a lower priced auto-parts store available product.

Exactly, if money weren't a problem then OEM FROM THE DEALER ITSELF WOULD BE MY CHOICE. You are making this about money when you're looking to purchase directly. Like I stated, purchase what you can afford.

I've never had a failure when ordering OEM parts, not manufactures of oem parts. To each their own.

Just to add awareness, Gates brand water pumps used to be manufactured in Japan and are now made in China. When doing a timing belt/water pump on my Subaru I noticed that the Gates pump looked significantly lower quality than I was used to. (Aluminum flashing still there, globs of machining grease left on it, etc.) and saw that they switched to China manufacturing. Now I only recommend Aisin kits/pumps. IIRC, Gates belts and the tensioner pulley are still made in Japan.
