Can I rule out rear main s leak if back of fly w is dry
Replacing the seal is tricky.
- You have to make sure not to scratch the sides of opening it presses into when removing the old seal.
- You have to make sure it is installed the right direction.
- Always use an OEM seal. Someone had put a brand new aftermarket one in mine and it was leaking.
- The seal must be installed with even pressure. The best method is to tap it in with the old seal.
Make sure all of this is done before you rule it out.
Because you are asking this, I would guess that you have a suspicion that it is leaking. What might that be?

I’ve looked up photos of a leaking rear main seal and I think from what I saw that any oil leaking from there would definitely see it’s way to the flywheel. I’m going to spray it down with cleaner and re torque it down and see if it still leaks. Maybe I didn’t torque down the two nuts for the flywheel cover.
Not true. The oil can just run down the side of the block. The flywheel also has enough velocity to likely sling most if not all oil off of it to where you could barely tell it was ever there.
