I have a 2002 Honda CRV (purchased in Phoenix AZ USA). Recently I started smelling gas when I would get out of the car after a drive. Took it to my mechanic who found a crack on the top part of the fuel pump which was the source of the order. At the time of the repair there was about a quarter tank(indicated by the gauge). After installation the gauge was reading correctly (qtr tank). I fueled it up, and the needle on the gas gauge now marked full. After driving for a while (175 miles) I noticed the gas gauge was still saying it was full. I took it back to the mechanic , who tested the unit and said he couldn't find anything wrong with the new fuel pump.
The gas gauge had been working fine before the new fuel pump was installed.
I don't want to trade one problem for another.
Any ideas?

Mechanic installed a second new unit - no difference - reads a little less than half.

Have driven 250 miles on this tanks of gas so far.
The tank holds 15 gallons, even if the CRV is getting 25 MPG (which it's not, mileage closer to 21 MPG) it has consumed 10 gallons it should be reading closer to 1/4 or less.

Mechanic has no clue what the issue could be.

Since the fuel gauge sending unit is incorporated as part of the fuel pump unit, and this coincided after the installation of the new fuel pump, it probably is due to the fuel pump unit.
