'95 Civic Coupe DX. D15b7 / Auto, no mods. 360K miles +
In the past few days I have begun hearing a knock, or occasionally a grunt from the passenger side floor (suspension). The car does not pull to either side.
It randomly occurs, when applying the brakes, gently (less than 1/2 G decel) going straight. Smooth road.
When I turn to the right, unloading the weight on the right, and gently touch the brake, once in a while it will knock or grunt.
Turning left, it doesn't make a knock. Going over bumps seldom makes a knock.
When I rotated my tires, the wheel passed the 12-6 / 9-3 test.
Could this be bushings > ball joints >loose something? Where is the best first thing to look at? Thanks in advance.

 

Is the battery tied down? Possible rack end bushing if it's manual steering. A bad rack end bushing would clunk if you push up really hard and suddenly on the passenger outer tie rod. Do light waves or washboard type roads exaggerate the noise more?

It's time to lift the car up and start grabbing suspension arms and shake them around in an effort to find the clunk. Don't forget to check the condition of the engine mounts and anything that may look loose in the bay. 23 years old and 360k miles means you need to check just about everything.

 

Battery is tight, this is on the pass side floor pan area, near where a suspension arm goes into a bushing on the body. Good idea about motor mounts, rebuilt engine put in 2 years ago...
