Imported my 96 Accord LX 2.2L non-VTEC into Canada and need to install DRL to pass safety inspection. Bought a kit but it requires tapping into a 12V source that is on when ignition is on. Anyone know of a source under the hood or am I forced to go through the firewall? Thanks.
Ignition switch ON power -> under-dash fuse/relay box -> other components
1. If you use an under-dash fuse box slot for switched power, you don't have to splice/tap into a wire. For example, use a Littelfuse Add-A-Circuit and new wire and run through firewall. There are rubber grommets on driver and passenger side at the firewall where this can be accomplished fairly quickly.
The following under-dash fuse slots are Hot when the ignition switch is in the ON (II) position:
FUSE 7 R/C MIRROR 7.5A
FUSE 8 HEATER CONTROL RELAY, A/C CLUTCH RELAY, COOLING FAN RELAY 7.5A
FUSE 10 (DAY LIGHTS) 7.5A
FUSE 11 RADIO MOTOR ANTENNA 10A
FUSE 1 BACK-UP LIGHTS, METER LIGHTS (TURN SIGNALS) 10A
FUSE 2 FUEL PUMP 15A
FUSE 3 (SRS) 10A
FUSE 4 ECU (CRUISE CONTROL) EAT ECU 7.5A
FUSE 5 P/W RELAY SUN ROOF RELAY (REAR WIPER) 7.5A
FUSE 6 WIPER WASHER 30A
Under-dash No. 10 fuse slot is used for DRL on Canada models. That slot should be empty, test if there is power at that slot with the ignition switched in the ON (II) position.
2. If you still want to splice/tap into an under-hood wire, then there are several components.
To name just two:
Blk/Yel wire to the Engine Control Mount Solenoid Valve (A/T vehicles)
That's great info, thanks. No. 10 in the under-dash box seems like the ideal choice.
One more question if any of you know.. are the low beams supposed to stay on when the high beams are turned on? Because on my vehicle they do. Not sure if this is factory behaviour or if the installation of the DRL kit caused this change.

If your DRLs are your Lo-Beams then your Lo-Beams are going to stay on when switched power is on regardless if your light switch is on the ON/OFF or HI-BEAM mode.
With the ignition switch OFF/LOCKED when you turn your headlights on you should be able to have HI-Beams on without the low beams being on.
