Just drove off in my new 2018 CR-V. LOVE the car so far. But I'm not especially thrilled with the digital-only speedometer. My brain doesn't work in digital when it comes to speed.

Unless I'm mistaken, you can add or subtract the tachometer (which is an analog, er, analog). But the speedo is just two big dumb digits.

Am I mistaken? Tell me I'm mistaken.

 

It’s pretty simple. There is a number. That’s your speed. If it’s above sign on the road that says speed limit, you’re speeding. Don’t do that, unless you like paying tickets.

You’ll get used to it. Other than the speedometer, how do you like the crv?

 

Brains don't process relative values as efficiently with digital. Honda should provide an option to replace the digital display with analog. Or ideally, a display which shows both analog and digital speed.
I don't mind the digital, but it's inconsistent at best for Honda to supply an analog-only tachometer with a digital-only speedometer. It also goes against human factors engineering conventions.

If this sounds nit-picky: It's not. The speed display is probably top 3 driver-automobile interfaces. One that we reference a dozen times each trip. One that impacts safety, fuel economy, and all sorts of other factors. It seems very "un-Honda" to misstep on such a basic element. You shouldn't have to "get used to" the most basic of interfaces on a brand new, $30,000 car.

Other than that...

Love it. Love it love it. My wife bought a new CR-V back in 2010. It's been absolutely exemplary. In 2011, I bought a new Subaru Outback (she had considered the Forrester when she got the Honda). Side by side, one on one, 6+ year comparison of the two, from new, with virtually identical real world use and her CR-V looks and runs like brand new. The Outback? Issue after issue after issue. Mechanical and electrical. Dozens if not hundreds of hours wasted at the dealership. Brake, suspension, tail lights, recalls, seat settings.

 

Update of sorts: I'd contacted Honda directly about this issue about the same time that I posted this comment/question here. Surprisingly, a representative from Honda USA phoned Friday and left a message saying they'd received my comments and were considering it. I'm not holding my breath. But it was nice to have a real person call and at least let me know my concern was being considered.
