Intermittent buzzing/humming noise-2006 CR-V SE
The automatic transmission in my UK built 2006 cr-v failed in MAR 2018 at 205k. I purchased another trans with torque converter from a 2006 cr-v with 105k that was wrecked (rear ended) in JAN 2018. Salvage yard indicated car was still in drivable condition with functioning trans. Had the trans shipped to my local shop where they replaced my failed trans. The mechanic flushed my old cooler and lines and replaced several seals before installing the replacement unit. Picked up car which drives great and trans shifts normally. But a day or so after the swap I started hearing, from inside car when engine is running, a steady buzzing or humming noise coming from the engine/trans bay.
The noise sounds a but like an electric fuel pump running before it primes up with a steady hum or buzz that doesn’t change pitch or level at different rpm’s. Sometimes the noise stops when trans is shifted into gear but the pattern is inconsistent. Other times it makes the noise when in drive until speed and typical Cr-v road noise drowns it out. It seems to occur more frequently when engine/trans is “cold”. Sound most often goes away after driving car for 15-20 minutes. Some days I rarely hear the noise, particularly on a hot day with ambient temps ove 85 degrees F.
i took the car back to the shop several times but it seems that by random chance it’s on a day that the noise stops before I arrive or it stops within a few minutes of an attempt to diagnose on the rack. I last left it over night so the mechanic could check it cold the next day. He called after tightening down the catalytic converter heat shield which was supposedly vibrating. Next day I drove the car and did not hear the noise for 50+ miles. Thought it was fixed, but next trip it started back again. I suspect it’s the transmission pump, but hope it’s something else. Any ideas?
Thanks for your time.
