Default B20 w. P72 head or B18C5: 200hp for 2k (ish)

Hi All,

I'm looking to spend 2k or close to it and achieve 200hp.*** I'm not counting the cost of a tune in my 2k. Basically looking for advice as this is my first time tearing into a motor internally.

I already have a P28 with Hondata S300 and a S80 LSD box. I also have a B20 block with a spun bearing (we'll call that free). Have a PLM style header, intake and can make a 2.5" or 3" exhaust. So the 2k is basically all for the motor itself.

The C5 I'm looking at is in great shape, it was dynoed at 167hp and will cost $1500. So I would need to squeeze 30hp out of it. I'm thinking pistons and cams to get me close? Possible with everything else remaining close to stock internally?

Option 2 would be to use my spun B20. I can pick up a P72 head for $100. From there I'm thinking rods, arp's, pistons, cams and valvetrain. Also replacement bearings and whatever else needs doing when it's apart. What intake manifold would you guys suggest for this type of a build?

I'm sure I'm missing some things, take it easy on me as I'm an older honda guy coming back to the scene after years of raising kids and having no time or money!

*Please no nitrous comments.

B20 would be nice but you'd need to make sure the crank is healthy, and obviously get it rebalanced and honed/cleaned up from the spun bearing.

If you can get the C5 at a good price, with all the accessories already with it, it would likely be much less work to push it up to 185+WHP. Cams, valvetrain, and a good exhaust system would get you there, without even touching the block.

B20 with GSR head would have a higher ceiling and overall output with the right combination of parts, but requires a full build. I'd suggest going with whatever you think would be a bit easier/cheaper, as the overall difference will likely be negligible to you, and if you've been out of the game for awhile and have a family I think you'd benefit from getting something on the road quick with no headaches

Thanks for the reply.

In response - the C5 sold to someone else yesterday! So there goes that idea.

Also, should have mentioned there is no rush for this engine or car to get going. It's a strictly weekend car/long term project. I'm more into the idea of getting some experience with a basic motor build at this point.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated (especially part combos or links to products I should use).

Look to the b20/check threads for this. You can start your research there. This topic is redundant and surf often enough to not warrant its own thread at this particular time.
