Default 1989 Honda Civic SI (D16A6) Issues

Hey, pretty new to these forums, but I’m having an issue with my ‘89 Civic SI.

For quite some time now it’s been throwing a CEL with the codes for CKP sensor and TDC sensor. The car runs rough, idles high and sometimes stalls at stoplights, and cannot rev past 4 without misfiring.

I’ve attempted replacing the distributor twice at this point (once because the original distributor was ruined, and the second time was under warranty since I thought it was a bad distributor). The CEL only showed up after I replaced the original dizzy.

I feel it might also be important to note that this is an engine swapped car, it’s a 1989 Honda Civic SI motor swapped into a 1989 Honda Civic Wagon.

Regardless, what do you guys think could be the issue at this point?

well just to make sure
you didnt put the distributor in with the little tabs that go into the cam shaft backwords did you ?
id start with removeing the dizzy and rotating the tabs the other way and see what happans

or just to check if its right
you set your motor to top dead center on the crank pully
and then on your dizzy you line up the lines that are engraved in the tabs that go in the cam shaft hole

Nah, it wouldn't be possible. There's a slight offset specifically meant to prevent that, so if you try putting it in backwards it won't go in. I've attempted this before as well.

Now, I didn't know anything about setting the motor to top dead center however.

I'm not sure which ECU would be wrong or correct, but I'm sure someone else here can chime in on that. Are you sure your using the correct ECU for that engine?

After rereading your info....are you running the correct distributor for the engine?

OBD-0 is the ECU for my car.

I would like to think that I am. Looks exactly the same, same plugs. I've looked extensively to ensure I got the right dizzy for my car. TD02 is the model for it, and that's the exact one that I have.

Having been swapped, how's the wiring? Was it a DPFI to MPFI swap? The CKP, CYL, and TDC sensors need to have shielded wire ran between the distributor and the ECU, and the shielding needs to be grounded on one end (for both the engine and chassis harnesses). Is it possible that someone has tampered with the wiring and maybe cut the shielding, or if it was a DPFI>MPFI swap, is it possible that unshielded wire was run?
