Del Sol Shifter as Short as Aftermarket?
Hey guys,
Just visiting, over from the Integra forum. Anyway, when I asked what short shifter he recommended my local tuning shop guy recommended an OEM Del Sol shifter. He says they are nice and short. Any of you del sol guys have aftermarket short shifters, or has anyone used a del sol shifter as a shorter shift replacement? Is one of these going to be as good as a Neuspeed or C's short shifter? It is for a 1995 Acura Integra LS 4-dr.
Thx,
Ben

I replaced the shifter in my del Sol with a B&M Edge, which I then cut another 1/2 inch off, and trimmed the OEM shift **** down about 3/4 inch. Its shorter, nicer and feels better to me, but that's my opinion. I have no idea if the OEM del Sol shifter will affect your throw. I may have the OEM del Sol one (cut about 1/2 inch off the threads) which you can have for a couple of bucks plus shipping, but I may have thrown it out already. I'll check at home (IM to remind me!)...probably won't be able to check until Friday though...

Del Sol shifter in a civic is very cool. Shortest OE shifter available. Can't imagine why you would want anything shorter. It is inexpensive, and Honda quality. It will require spacers if you put it in an Integra. The length of the crossways bolt on the bottom is longer on the Integras than on the Civic/Del sol. We put one in my friends '00 Si. Bolted right in and feels tight.

I have been looking into this, now I can go OEM, wOOt!

I'd be interested to see how if compares in a Civic relative to a del Sol.

hey I changed out my Del Sol's shifter with an aftermarket short shifter, and guess what? It's longer than the OEM one, and it don't shift that good either! And I had to cut like an inch off! Stick with the OEM one.
The oem del sol shifter is actually about 1 1/2 inch shorter than the stock integra shifter...I had a no name brand short shifter for the integra and it was still about 1/2 longer than the stock shifter..The del sol shifter would work good in an integra, but would need spacers.
Here's the pics that OE Tuner spoke of. It's a Del Sol shifter in a 00' Civic Si. I have had it in the car for over 2 years and it works like a dream. Shifts are short and sweet. My only complaint is that the shifter pivot is designed too far forward in the floor(IMO), for a 6'-1" person like myself so I always have to lean forward a bit to shift. Installing a shorter shifter magnifies the problem - but it really isn't too bad. Also - Take a look at how much extra shift boot material there is after the install - I never cared but something to consider...
By the way, if anyone wants this Del Sol shifter I'd be willing to sell it for like $20 shipped or pick it up if you are near Detroit (My car got around a hundred dents in a hail storm last weekend. It's a lease w/4mos left so i'll be turning it in now and everything needs to be factory)
- Damn it! I just tried to post the pictures and I can't figure out how (I'm a newbie to this forum). When I click image it just writes IMG/IMG in the text area - I thought it would ask to select a file...Need some help

You put the internet URL of the pictures you want to post BETWEEN the IMG tags.
For http://www.postingpicsiseasy.com/img1.jpg you would put in (I'm going to leave out the brackets) IMG http://www.postingpicsiseasy.com/img1.jpg /IMG . (I'd leave out the space tho. just IMG]xxxxx[/IMG

i had the del sol shifter in my civic after i did the swap. yes it is shorter apperarance wise, but it does not change the throw. if you are looking for short shifter performance, get a short shifter. if you are going for looks, than get the del sol.... i have the b&m ss

its not really how high it sits that affects the length of the throws....it is the length of the pivot point to where it connects to teh shift linkage
i put a cheap apc short shifter in my del sol and the throws are real short
if you want one that sits low too look at the DC sports one...that one sits real low btu tehy are around 80 dollars
oh and i know someone is gonan talk some shti abouit the apc short shifter..whatever..it was 15bucks
Here's the deal. The Del Sol shifter is the exact same length as my '00 Si from the pivot down to the tranny linkage. But the length from the pivot up to the shift **** is somewhere around 3" shorter - if I remember right. So the throw is definitely shorter - probably by almost an inch and you can definitely feel it. When shifters are designed you got two choices to make the throw shorter - shorten the upper distance or lengthen the bottom distance (simple mechanical advantage). It's true you get much more effect by lengthening the bottom than shortening the top. For example, I did the trig on my original Si shifter - if I were to shorten my stock Si shifter up top by 1" and leave the bottom length the same I'd see around .25" shorter throw, but if I were to lengthen the bottom distance by an inch and leave the top the same, I'd see around a 1" shorter throw - bigger effect, but they both shorten it.
I'd suspect some of the aftermarket shifters like B&M probably keep the upper distance a little longer for comfort and ergonomics, but lengthen the bottom. This is no doubt probably a better compromise than the Del Sol shifter. I chose the Del Sol b/c on certain things I'm a cheap ***...and it did the job pretty well.

I have one in my 93 civic. It feels really good and it seems to sit lower than most. As far as being a shorter shift, I can't say but I beleive the reason it is shorter is due to the fact it doesn't have that large bend that Integra shifters do. If someone wants I'll take a picture, my car is pretty gutted
last summer i bought a short shifter for 90 dollars installed from this performance shop around here. The shifter completely sucks
and i'm not even sure what kind it is. all i know is that it is light blue color. any guesses on what kind of shifter this is and if i got ripped off?

I have a del sol shifter and some shifter bushings in my 00 si and wouldn't want it any other way. It's great, the bend in the sol shifter actually angles it towards the driver. I have also heard that short shifters can tear up the synchos in your tranny because of the increased pressure, but the del sol one is factory honda so it must be good.
