What year F22, 90-93 F22A or the 94-97 F22B? I am going to assume that we are comparing the SOHC F series engines. I am also going to assume that you are comparing the VTEC variants of the F22 & F23.

F22B1 VTEC and F23A VTEC are pretty much identical, aside from a 0.1L of displacement difference. Block internals, cylinder head and valve train are identical between these two engines. Intake manifold on the F23 is a larger volume and usually used as an upgrade on the F22B1 engine. The F22b1 uses a 2 wire intake air control valve while the F23 uses a 3 wire rotary air control valve. Easy enough to adapt.

Another question please. The F23A1 has a higher compression ration than the F22B1. Is this due solely to the increased displacement of the F23A1, or does the F23A1 cylinder head have a smaller volume as well?

OK here ya go - let me get that for ya!.

Google is your friend!.

I remember a time when H-T was a much more resourceful group of members, back when threads like this one would have got a big one of these.

A lot of good info, but sadly nothing that lists the cc of cylinder head volume of either motor, nor compares the two.

From what I have measured the H23, F22A/B and F23 combustion chambers are all relatively close.... between 48-50cc +/- 2cc.

If you are into a build that is getting into that much detail. It is always best to measure everything yourself.

I have done that in the past to insure each combustion chamber is of equal volume. I have a F22B1 which has a leaking head gasket, which probably means the head is warped. I pulled the head off a very clean F23A1 and checked it with a machinists straight edge. It is perfectly straight. My concern was, since the F22B1 does not have a knock sensor, would my motor still be able to use the same grade of gas. So apparently it will. I thought the extra compression came from the increased displacement, but I was not sure.

The F23's larger displacement and the use of a piston with a slightly smaller dish cc is where it picks up the extra point in compression. In short the F23 head on an F22B1 should yield approximately the same compression as your F22B1, if anything it may be a touch lower and you will be able to use the same grade fuel.

Only real need for change in octane rating is when you get into compression over 10.5:1 or heavy loads/towing with these older ECU/PGM-FI systems. Newer ECU's can adjust timing and fuel maps when using different fuels and driving circumstances.
