Default Rear Hatch Won't Latch

Just bought this 91 CRX back in February so this car is still new to me. One of the problems it has that worries me most is that the rear hatch won't latch. You can walk up to it and open the hatch without pulling the release or anything. Even if I press down on the latch with a screwdriver or something, it simply springs back to the open position. Anyone have the same problem and can help?

Snagged the latch mechanism out of my old 88 and installed it on my 91, and while this one will latch and stay locked when depressed with a screwdriver or something, I just can't seem to get it to latch with the hook on the trunk lid. I don't know what to do, I messed around with it all day and couldn't get it to work for the life of me. The only thing I can think of that might be preventing it from working properly is the fact that the bumper is slightly pushed inwards (one of the previous owners was rear-ended i assume). I can't think of any other reason why it won't hook on or stay locked.

A friend of mine had this happen and he ended up putting some electrical tape around the bottom of the latch and was able to get it to close. I think he had adjusted the latch but that didn't work and the tape made it low enough to catch.
