1990 DX curb strike aftermath...
Welp, this is a bit of a long story to set up, so here goes...
About a month or so ago, we got a fairly heavy snowfall in Seattle. I was at school that night and was driving home in less-than-ideal driving conditions when I went full-on hockey puck into the curb and hit the right front wheel. Hard. Managed to limp home and put the car up on stands to take a look.
First damage assessment found a bent rim and some serious alignment issues. Nothing that a trip to the local Pick'n'Pull and a nearby Les Schwab couldn't fix, right?
Yeah, nope. Got about a week into driving it when I heard an odd clattering noise coming from the general direction of the transmission. Again, put it up on stands and got underneath it and looked much more closely. Drained the transmission fluid, too, as it had been a while and I figured that, if I had internal damage, I'd have metal flakes in the fluid. Thankfully, there wasn't any flakes, but there wasn't much fluid left in there, either. I refilled the transmission and drove it around a bit to see if the sound went away. No dice, still clattering. Back on the stands it went, and climbed under again. I noticed that the right CV output was rubbing against the housing of the transmission, and the left was standing off from the housing quite a bit. My first thought was that I'd managed to pop them loose from their seats, so I pulled the CV shafts off and I've taken a look with every inspection tool I can, and I think I see what looks like part of a bearing cage floating around down near the differential output.
I'm absolutely going to be pulling the transmission off the car and opening it up it now, but is there anything else other than the differential bearings that I should pay extra attention to after this series of misfortunes and misdiagnoses?
