Default Keep getting vtech and oil pressure valve codes

I have an 03 Honda element. I overheated the engine about a year ago. Using a local mechanic shop that specializes in Honda. Did a head job on the engine. The car would almost make it through the first oil change and would come up with a VTEC code or an oil pressure switch code and start losing power right at 2500 RPMs. We were seeing some residue in the oil so we continued to drive it in the hopes that whatever it was would circulate out. The car would consistently go almost to the first oil change and then we would get a VTech code. Eventually it was recommended to me to get another engine. We got an 08 engine with 40,000 miles on it. It is doing the same thing . I am at my wits end. I have spent $4500 on this car that is worth $5000. Any ideas?
