88 CRX Speedometer Drive Gear or Worm Gear
Hi there, I have an 88' CRX. The Speedometer Drive Gear or 'Worm Gear' as some people call it is broken (makes an awful whirling noise and the speedometer and odometer do not work). These are the gears in the gauge cluster; two little plastic gears. My question is: does anyone know what gauge clusters share the same gears between Hondas? I would rather search the junk yards than replace the whole cluster. Thank you.
From what I recall, replacing just the gear is going to be difficult, as the frame of the mechanical portion of the speedometer is stamped steel and I believe you won't be able to disassemble it. You can, however pull just the speedometer portion out of the gauge cluster and swap it over. Regarding the speedometer, I think 88-89 is different than 90-91, but it has been about 13 years since I messed with the gauge cluster. For sure the 88-89 cluster is different than the 90-91 cluster.
HI All, I took out my gauge cluster this weekend; you can take apart the front to fix internal stuff. I initially thought that my worm gears for the speedo were broken, but they were fine. I put in a new speedo cable and everything is working again. Also, I got rid of the OBD1 Code 17 Vehicle speed sensor light coming on. Thank you.
