Notchy Tranny
I bought my CiViC new and the tranny started getting 'notchy' after only 9k. It was also EXTREMELY hard to get into reverse. So, I started using Red Line tranny fluid and the problem[s] went away.
I have over 65k on my ride now and it's still shifting great. I use Red Line MTL in the winter and Red Line MT-90 in the summer. Most ppl can get away with running MTL all the time, but I do a lot of driving in the Arizona desert in the summer; one of the hottest places on Earth.
Anyway, that's my suggestion...

I sometimes have a hard time getting in reverse.. but i didnt think it was MTF related? There is no syncro in reverse, so you must go through 1st and 2nd and then try putting it in reverse.. always works for me and my friends' cars!
So its the MTF?? I'll have to try that, I dont grind, but its notchy and I find it hard to put in reverse. Is there anything special you need to do to change the MTF?? ive never done that before? is it like an oil change?

I dont know if yours grinds but there is a TSB out on the tranny for the 99-00 Si/SiR
I have the exact same problem. It doesnt grind but 1-3 and reverse are very notchy. I already had the tranny fuild changed and replaced with Honda MTF and it is still there.
there was a guy who had the TSB's posted on his website. The TSB simply said if the car was under warrenty to replace the gears and gear synchros and had the procedure to do it, im sure your local dealer would also have the info.

I don't know about you, but I run Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my engine to reduce wear. So do a lot of other ppl, but they continue to use Honda manual transmission lubricant (MTL). I don't know anybody that runs 'Honda' motor oil, yet they will run 'Honda' tranny fluid. Doesn't make any sense to me...
It's your car. Do what you want. However, if you're smart you'll run either Red Line MTL/MT-90 or Neo 7W in your tranny. Honda MTL sucks!
Care to offer any tips for switching fluids? I am willing to try to atleast see if it makes a difference.
I fill my tranny from the engine compartment area using a funnel with a long hose - like the ones they use for automatic transmissions. You can fill it from underneath the car if you have a pump, but I prefer doing it from 'on top.'
Other than that...

How hot does it get?
The highest temperature ever recorded was 127 degrees in Parker in 1905. More recently, Phoenix reached 122 degrees in 1992 and 121 degrees in 1995.

you can use the plug (to fill in tranny oil).. where the speed senser is at right... on the top.. right? cuz i been filling oil up in there..

are you talking about a recall? What does TSB stand for? I called Honda Directly gave them my serial number and they said there where no recalls.

Is it 1905, 1992 or 1995? No, so stop your crying its 74 NOW! The hot days always make up for the easy Winters.
This guy is asking about his 'notchy' tranny, not the climate in Arizona. Moreover, I'm a 'native' to this area. My parents moved here in 1942. I was born and have lived in the Arizona desert my whole life. We have homes in Payson and Gilbert. So, don't tell me how great the weather is here, how we have less 'darkies' than wherever you're from, how this is the fastest growing area in the country and/or how you're growing right along with it, blah, blah, blah...
I recommend that he changes his tranny to Red Line MTL/MT-90 or Neo 7W/75W-90 HD. At this stage, it will probably take care of ALL his tranny problems; past, present and future. The only caveat is if he lives in an area where it gets hot in the summer. If he does, then he should run Red Line MT-90 or Neo 75W-90 HD in the summer months for added protection against heat build-up and premature wear.
Generally speaking, I use MTL in the winter and MT-90 in the summer, but last winter I got lazy and ran MT-90. The only difference is that when it's cold, you need to let MT-90 warm up a little before slamming it through the gears. Otherwise, you will feel a little resistance when shifting before the tranny oil has warmed up.
Additional thoughts:
DO NOT USE 10W/30 MOTOR OIL IN YOUR TRANNY!!! This oil is made for engines not trannies - I don't give a **** what anyone says on this issue. If you want me to give you all my reasons, I will. But, please, just take my word for it...
DO NOT USE HYPOID OIL IN YOUR TRANNY!!! The hypoid oil you find on store shelves is GL-5 spec 99% of the time. It will eat your synchros and brass bushings in quick order.
THE ONLY OIL YOU WANT TO USE IS SAE GL-4!!! Of all the GL-4 gear lubes on the market, Red Line MTL and MT-90 are the best. They use the same chemistry. The only difference is MT-90 is slightly thicker - and I mean SLIGHTLY. If you happen to have a 'hard-on' for Red Line products, for whatever reason, Neo is a close second.
Red Line and Neo synthetic gear oil costs around 8 bones a quart, but you only need 2-quarts to fill a CiViC transaxle. That's $16.00 to have the world's best gear lube in your ride.
If anyone has any questions or comments on tranny oil, I'll respond, but let's stay on topic, okay???
...I stayed away from redline strictly from a story I heard of a guy who used it and when he had tranny problems and they ripped it open everything was coated with the red gunk...
They sell and install Red Line and Neo tranny oil at my Honda dealership, Showcase Honda; the biggest Honda dealer in the southwest and #3 in the country. I'll take a picture of it sitting on their shelves in the fuc*ing parts department if you don't believe ME!
So for my B16A2 should I use MTL or MTL 90?
And thanks!!!!
