Help identify my 2002 CR-V ‘s issues
Automatic transmission 2002 CR-V with 168,000 miles on the clock experiencing problems my mechanic can’t identify.
Symptoms: car starts fine, but unless gas is held for 30sec-1min, it will die as soon as it’s shifted from park to Drive/reverse but wont die if shifted to neutral. Once you can get it in D with out it dying it usually has no issues. However, recently during a long drive, the rpms started jumping up and down while i was holding gas steady. Later when trying to turn the car on again, the car would immediately die. Tried to solve the problem by holding the gas at 3000rpm for about 2-3min several times and the rpms were bouncing all over, dark smoke was coming out the tail pipe, and it would die the second the gas was let off. After 2-3 days of letting it rest... went back to the previous condition. Otherwise, power seems really low and gas consumption seems high. The car will often only shift into a higher gear when rpms have reached about 4000, sometimes higher. Sometimes i have to pump gas to trick it into changing gear.
Ive taken it to the mechanic several times and he seems completely clueless... of course that doesn’t stop him from charging me to do whatever the heck he’s done the last 3 times without improvement.

Just saw your post...and I know they usually do not give trouble, but the first place I would look, is the in-tank fuel filter.
