Hey guys, just wanted to make a post here talking about something i found interesting after switching to alloy wheels from my steel rims.
The rims that were on my car when i bought it (7th owner) were these:
These bad boys were apparently 8 USD to 25 USD a piece from Alibaba.
Anyways I tried to run stock hubcaps on them and it always sucked the inner part of the hubcaps in by 2" because the offset was totally wrong for the car. On top of that none of them were round.
So i always had some issues with steering in this car. When going slow it would be hard to turn, sometimes it would bind up and not move.
Also when going down the highway i would be fighting what felt like off-balanced front wheels at 65mph-70mph. And really really imprecise steering at high speeds.
I thought it was the steering rack for the longest time...
But this month I bought some 2002 Accord rims off of ebay:
For the price of 140USD and 160USD for shipping.
And yeah one of the three wheels was junk but for that price i couldn't complain. I bought a replacement rim from the junkyard for like 55USD. It is painted a different color but not a big deal.
I then got some Continental TrueContact 195/60r15's for them:
HOLY MOLY. The car's steering and high speed issues are all gone! I can cruise at 85 all day with 0.1-0.5 inch of play at best! Also of note my cruise control started working normally instead of jumping up 5mph each time i set it... Now it just keeps whatever speed it was doing.
So i guess the lesson is: don't buy 8 dollar wheels to slap on your car
