New EF owner/Build...soon to come
Hello forum,
Some background: I used to have a 91 CRX that was given to me as a graduation gift back in 2009. I joined the military in 2011 and donated to one of my close friends (he needed a car and I felt like it was time to move on). I was moved to FL, then bought a 09 Lancer ES (not the EVO just the base model FWD) in late 2011. In 2012 I was told to move to CO and brought my Lancer with me, but ended up blowing the motor in 2014 and sold the car shortly after Then my wife needed a SUV for work so she ended up loving a 08 Patriot (which is an utter POS). In 2015 I picked up a 91 DA9 LS with an incomplete B20B swap w/ YS1 cable transmission (still OBD0, stock LS ECU, threw a few codes). I was projected to restore the car and complete the swap. But long behold Uncle Sam said I need to move to CA in 2016 and been here ever since. I shipped the LS out to me and started working on it and found the previous owner ran into a ditch because the left side of the frame and supports is damaged bad and decided to put it out of its misery, so it is sitting on jack-stands in my garage until I strip it down and scrap the body. Made the decision to look for an EF and bought a 91 EF in Nov 2016 and here I am. Sorry for the long intro. The car: Bought it from a kid that had a B18C/T in it and blew the motor from too much boost, so he restored and swapped a D15..(can’t remember the rest) in there and sold me the car.
Here is what I noticed on the car so far:
Straight body, paint is fading, small dime size rust hole by the right rear tail light and trim pieces missing from the doors
Deleted the hood latch and put 2 hood pins w/ key locks instead
Quick release on the bumper, also missing front grill insert
Complete interior minus the back tire cover
Blown hatch supports
All glass and mirrors are clean no damage
Aftermarket door locks, however no key for the doors or trunk
Shady ASF wiring, with a push to start, clutch bypass, no radio or radio harness
Driver seat can only lock in one position
No battery hold downs (he had the battery sitting on the transmission)
No fans for the radiator
No intake
He said he put “new” suspension/ and steering parts (Ball joints, tie rods, bushings)….lies
But the motor runs good no leakage, there is no pops, grinds, etc.. from the transmissionNov 2016 to present:
I moved the battery to the trunk, I was uncomfortable with where he had the battery
I put in the stereo from my DA in the EF
Bought an aftermarket fan, I drive 40-55miles x3 a week and 10-15miles daily, I needed some surety that the radiator wasn’t going to overheat
I daily the car most days, seem to be averaging ~216miles to 8(+/-.3) gallons of gas.
I took the wheels of the DA9 (fat fives) and put them on, since there was a ton of thread left on them
Had to change the driver side caliper, since it was dragging pretty bad (The kid stated he “swapped” the front end with a DA9…so he says, need to verify)
I picked up GSR leather seats for $30 damn near mint…couldn’t pass that up
I am getting new steering parts (upper control arm, inner/outer control arms, lower ball joints, trailing arm bushings) from RockAuto in Feb
If I don’t sell the motor and transmission by the end of Feb then, in March I will be looking to rebuild and swap it into the EF, but I will cross that bridge when I get to that point.
I did pick up a Haynes and Chilton manual to sort out the wiring mess.
I did some searching around and saw that most parts from the DA can swap to the EF.
The only question I haven’t found and still looking for answers are:
Can the DA coilovers bolt on to the EF as is or not, using the DA forks and rear end?
I want to swap the drums to discs do I use the EF trailing arm bushings or the DA?
Would the DA automatic window regulator/motor fit into the EF, with not much modifications?
I know we all like pictures, when I get out from work I will upload some. My goal for this car is to be my daily, and restore it. I will update as often as time allows me
