Default Reading ECU used with mid 1990s D16A6 Engine

What sort of diagnostic machines were used to read the ECU which was used with a Mid 1990s D16A6 Engine? How much information can be read?

I am in the UK and have a 1994 British built car called a Rover 216. This was based on a 4th generation Civic. They were also sold in the UK as the Honda Concerto. I believe the Concerto was also sold in Europe and Japan.

This car is fitted with a 1.6l D16A6 Engine. These engines were known as the D16Z2 when used in the British Rovers.

Thanks for any replies.

Thanks for the reply.

Am I right that there was no plug-in reader available when these ECUs were sold?

Correct. You counted the flashes on the dash check engine light and went to the manual to decern issues.

Thanks for the replies. The vehicle is working fine at the moment. I just wanted to know this in case I ever needed it.

The ECU fitted to this vehicle has a LED window on the unit itself. Does the check engine light flash in the same sequence?

Possibly. We mainly look to the dashboard. Most ECUs funny have that window on the case itself
