92 Accord hard to start if not started on the first try
I have a 92 Accord, 320K but still runs well. However, if I try to start it and I stop cranking before the engine starts running, when I try to start it again, it will crank but will not start. If I wait 5 minutes or so, it will start. Sometimes the flood start procedure will work, but not always. Waiting for a while, then trying again always works. Cold weather, hot weather makes no difference. Cold engine, hot engine, also makes no difference. I get the same behavior. I've recently replaced the plugs, wires, coil, distributor and plug well seals. The timing is spot on and it runs well once it is started. It seems like a flooding issue. if so, where should I look first, injectors, pressure regulator, ...?. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to see 500K with this car.
For what its worth... I think I may have figured out the problem. Yesterday, I took the car to the auto parts store and after picking up what I needed, I tried to start the car and It would turn over but not start. This behavior seemed very similar to when I had a bad main relay. The car would always cold start, but if shut off after running, it would be hard to start. I read somewhere this had something to do with the relay heating up while running which would cause it to fail to engage the fuel pump when started hot. I replace the main relay today and I have not been able to reproduce the previous problem. In retrospect, I should have check the fuel pump voltage when the car would not start. That would have indicated a bad main relay. Hope this helps someone.
