best springs for a "smooth ride"
Hi, I have a 1990 Honda Civic DX hatchback. I want to replace the springs. I have 195/60R15 tires. I want a smooth ride (I don't really want to lower it anymore) as this will be by daily driver. Any recommendations on which springs I should get?
There's much more than springs that affect ride quality.
Shocks, tires, proper maintenance of balljoints and bushings, having enough shock travel, etc.
You have to have a soft rear spring for a nice ride. You can have the stiffest spring up front and I doubt you'll feel it in comfort. That's because the weight distribution is up front, the rear suspension travel matters more since there's more leverage.
But without good shocks, or a bottoming out suspension because you're too low, or a rattling steering rack, it obviously cannot achieve a nice ride.

The best balance I have found (so far) was the Tokico Blue kit. 1"-1.5" drop, just a little stiffer, but much more responsive. Very good ride on the highway, I thought it was pretty close to a good stock setup. That was with 195/60R14 tires on old Enkei wheels. Problem is I haven't found the full kit available anymore, and the front struts for an EF hatch don't even seem to be widely available. FWIW, my brother is convinced the springs are relabeled Eibach ProKits, assuming those are still available.
Bilsteins, H&R's, Michelins - personal preference
Springs are primarily for ride height. Shocks/struts/dampers or whatever we're calling them this week have more control over ride quality. As stated previously, there are many factors.
155/75-13's will make it ride better, less contact with the road (narrower), tall/flexible sidewall, etc. Handling will suffer though.

I'll second the H&R springs. Had them on my old daily driver hatch, loved them. I also put top hats on it with tokico blues up front and stock replacement shocks on the back, like Tyson said make sure what your running now is in good shape too. Thing handled great and rode nice and smooth.

I bet if you replace your worn out bushings with stock or Hardrace versions, you'll be amazed at the improvement in the ride, even before you touch replacing the shocks/springs.
